I worked with John for 12 years at Gaithersburg Middle School. He so loved working with the kids- encouraging some, admonishing others - he wanted every young person to be the best they could be and made a difference in the lives of so many.

I am a student at Gaithersburg Middle School and Mr. Flaherty was such an amazing person to me. I love him so very much that words can not be explain. Mr. Flaherty help me with school and giving such great advice to students and me. Mr. Flaherty cared about me, protected me, and kept me out of trouble. If I could go back in time I would of said "Thank you very much for everything and I love you too I care about you and I am thankful to have such an amazing bestfriend/security guard you are." Im am very hurt you left pretty soon I would love to see you one more time. At Gaithersburg Middle School I remembered you walking me down the hallway to go to class, I remembered your laugh, smile and the kind word you would say. The first day of school of 6th grade, you said "Connie Lindelof was a wonderful teacher, she taught your mother and was a beautiful woman just like you!" I wont forget our time we spent together. Thank you, Mr. Flaherty for everything I will always be that young Connie you know.

As a brand new Assistant Principal at Gaithersburg Middle School in 1990 John took me under his wing and shared his tremendous knowledge of that institution. We had over 1400 kids and I believe John knew each and every one of them. He knew all the places and all of the players. His love of his colleagues and the students at GMS was remarkable. He was always a kind and giving individual. During the summers he would always invite me to Camden Yards to see the Baltimore Orioles and our favorite ballplayer, Cal Ripken Jr. Sitting out in the outfield bleachers sipping on a cold one..,we were both in heaven. We LOVED John Flaherty and he was a good man. May he rest in peace until we meet again. GOD BLESS YOU MY BROTHER.

Johnny we hardly knew ye. Said about another "Jack" named Kennedy. Flaherty was as big in life as his spirit will be. John was always in touch with me with his late partner Martha Brunzell and I was their enforcer as Vice President for security for SEIU. As a New Yorker and Bostonian are love was always for our sports teams and blessings of dealing with children. Quoting another Kennedy (Ted) after Bobby "People see things as they are and ask why, I see things that never were and ask why not" That was how JF lived and how we learned from him. Sleep in peace for all the suffering you did on earth. Keep your wings over us. We are better for knowing you.

Lavina and I are deeply saddened by John's passing. We want to extend our sincere condolences to his mother Audrey, his sister Jean, and brothers Robert and Richard.

Our memories of our colleague John are those of a kind hearted and caring man. He played an invaluable role for more than three decades, making Gaithersburg Jr. High/ Intermediate/ Middle School a safe, caring, and welcoming place for all of the staff and students. We were very fortunate to have known him, worked with him, and to have had him as a friend.
