Obituary

Patricia Anderson (April 2, 1931- May, 3, 2023)

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Patricia Ann Anderson, on May 3, 2023 at the age of 92.

Patricia was born in Buffalo, New York on April 2, 1931. She and her brother, Malcolm Burtwell, were raised by her parents, Malcolm and Mildred (Millie) Burtwell in Buffalo. After graduating from high school, Patricia attended Northwestern University in Chicago, where she met her future husband, John Anderson. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics, Patricia worked for a television cooking show in Chicago as well as in a test kitchen developing new recipes for a large food corporation. Prior to starting a family, Patricia also enjoyed teaching third grade for several years.

Patricia and John had two children, Bryan and Kimberly. The family moved from Chicago to Connecticut in 1962 and then on to Spokane, Washington in 1966. While raising children in Spokane, Patricia also enjoyed volunteering for her church, Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, where she served as Secretary and President of the St. Nicholas Guild. She was also First Vice President and then President of Church Service League, and the President of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Spokane.

Patricia moved to Brookeville, Maryland in 2014, where she lived with her daughter’s family. While in Maryland, Patricia enjoyed many family get-togethers, beach vacations and holiday celebrations with the family. She especially treasured time with her dear friend and aide, Margaret, with whom she enjoyed planning and cooking a special weekly dinner for the family. Patricia also had a special bond with the family’s two golden retrievers, Maisie and Bella, who carefully watched over her as “therapy dogs.”

Patricia was a life-long learner who enjoyed history and always kept informed of current events. Right up until her passing, she avidly read non-fiction books, watched public television and read the newspaper each day. During her lifetime, she traveled to many places around the world. She especially enjoyed trips where she could experience nature, including visits to many National Parks, hot springs in British Columbia, and yearly visits to Cabo San Lucas with friends and family. She enjoyed two very special trips in her last years – to attend her grandson’s wedding in Orlando as well as a road trip to explore New York’s Hudson River Valley.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; her brother; her husband, John; and her dear friend David. She is survived by her children, Bryan Anderson of Poulsbo, Washington; Kimberly Sconce and husband, Freddie, of Brookeville, Maryland; her grandchildren, Wes Sconce of Salt Lake City, Utah; Daniel Sconce and wife, Katie, of Olney, Maryland; her great-grandchild, Griffin; and her bonus great-grandchild, Reagan.

Patricia will be interred at the columbarium of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, Washington. A memorial service will be hosted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Montgomery Hospice http://www.montgomeryhospice.org.
