Oren Wasson Obituary

Oren (Al) Wasson, 86, passed away on January 30, 2022 in Olney, Maryland. His wife Anne Wasson predeceases him. His siblings Helen, Dwight, and Bob, his sons David and Douglas, grandchildren Diana and Corinne, daughter in-laws Sylvia and Judy, survive him.
Al was born in Wooster, Ohio, where he grew up as a farmer’s son.  He excelled in school, graduating from Northwestern High School.  Being the oldest of four siblings, he became the first member of his family to go to college, graduating from the College of Wooster.  From there, he went to graduate school at Yale University and earned a PhD in physics.  While in graduate school, he met and married his wife Anne and they had two children.  After graduating, he began a long career in physics, first at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island and then at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg.  After retiring from physics, he spent many years as a substitute teacher in the Montgomery County School District.
Al was first and foremost a great dad and husband.  He had a heart of gold and was always helping out in any way he could. He was also very active in the local community. Al was a long time member of the Laytonsville Lions Club, serving that club in a wide range of roles, including several terms as King Lion. He was also a devoted member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church.   He also volunteered as a basketball and soccer coach for the Olney Boys and Girls Club, and as an official for the community swim team.
One of his great passions were baseball and golf.  He was very active in the old Brooke Manor Country club, playing on their course often. He also liked to volunteer at the local PGA tour events.  A major highlight of each year was the Wasson family vacation at Myrtle Beach where he enjoyed playing with all of his family members and relaxing at the beach.  He was also a huge baseball fan.  First of the Cleveland Indians and then later of the Baltimore Orioles.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 2 pm at St. Bartholomews Episcopal Church in Laytonsville, MD.
Donations in his honor can be made to the College of Wooster , the Laytonsville Lions Club and St. Bartholomews Episcopal Church in Laytonsville, MD.
