Vernon R. Duley, of Middletown, Md., passed away Monday, December 2, 2024. He was “still kickin’” at the age of 94. Born November 27, 1930, in Laytonsville, Md, he was a son of the late Elmer R. Duley and Lena F. (Whetzel) Duley. On July 18, 1959, he married Shirley (Baker) Duley, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Anthony Duley and Thomas Duley, both of Frederick, Md. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Whitney (Michael) Fisher of Bellefonte, Pa; Timothy (Jody) Duley of Wolfsville, Md; and Jessica Duley of Boonsboro, Md. He was preceded in death by his youngest son Todd Duley in November 2018. Also preceding him were a sister, Florence M. Baker and a brother, Robert E. Duley.
He was a 1948 graduate of Gaithersburg High School. He joined the United States Airforce in 1952 and served his country for six years, including one year overseas during the Korean War. A gifted aircraft mechanic, his post-military career spanned 36 years with United Airlines. He enjoyed being outdoors in the woods, hunting and fishing, and old Western books and movies.
He was a loving, devoted husband and a hardworking provider for his family. He will be sorely missed but very fondly remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his entertaining storytelling.
Graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
