Velma Cordelia Oland
Velma Cordelia (Pugh) Oland, age 96, formerly of Laytonsville, MD passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Heartfields Assisted Living in Frederick, MD. She was born in Piney Creek, NC to the late Dodge and Cordelia Moxley Pugh.
In 1943, following graduation from Piney Creek High School in North Carolina, Velma moved to Maryland where she was employed at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. In 1947, Velma married Simon Craver Oland. They were married 65 years upon his passing in 2013.
Velma enjoyed being a long-time member of the Laytonsville Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she was active in the Women’s Society.
Velma was also predeceased by one sister: Vesta Furry of Frederick, MD; three sisters-in-law: Carolyn Mullinix, Ruth Duvall and Marilyn Green of Damascus, MD; four brothers and two sisters-in-law: Guy Pugh and wife, Ruby; Dent Pugh; Graham Pugh and wife, Irene; and Albert Pugh of North Carolina.
Velma is survived by her son, Douglas Oland and wife, Patricia of Middletown, MD and daughter, Beverly Collins and husband, Stephen of Mooresville, NC; grandchildren: Bart Oland and wife, Kelly of Frederick, MD; Brian Brown of Germantown, MD; Christopher Oland and wife, Rachele of Davidsonville, MD; and Sarah Collins of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren: Breanna and Skylar Oland of Frederick, MD; Alexis, Julia and Jacob Brown of Germantown, MD; and Jackson Oland of Davidsonville, MD; sisters-in-law: Blanche Pugh of Piney Creek, NC and Inis Parsley of Vinton, Ohio; brother-in-law: George Green of Damascus, MD; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may visit on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Roy W. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Rd., Laytonsville, MD 20882. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 21720 Laytonsville Rd., Laytonsville, MD 20882. Interment will be at Laytonsville Methodist Cemetery.
