Shirley Elizabeth (Pattie) Springer was born at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD on February 16, 1935. She was the daughter of Thelma Oursler and Meredith Pattie, Sr., Shirley graduated from St. Louis Parochial School in Clarksville, MD in 1949. She graduated from the Academy of Holy Names High School, in Silver Spring, in 1953.
Shiley worked at Household Finance Company in Silver Spring for three years. She worked at the Sandy Spring Bank for at least 20 years and was the Head Teller at the "New" Colesville Branch Office. She worked for two years in the office of a maintenance and construction firm in Howard County. She concluded her employment years with over twenty years with the Howard County Public School System as Secretary to the Principal of two different Howard County Elementary Schools.
Shirley married John Francis Springer of Valley Lee, MD, in St. Mary's County, on April 30, 1960 at the old stone St. Louis Church in Clarksville where Shirley and Brother attended parochial school. They lived for a year in a second-floor apartment in Brookeville. They then moved to a new rambler residence on Brown's Bridge Road in Highland, MD, and they lived there for 55years. She and Francis moved into the Vantage House Retirement Community in 2014. Shirley moved into an independent living apartment and Francis entered the Medical Care Unit at Vantage House where he died in 2018.
Due to declining health in February 2022, Shirley moved into an Assisted Care apartment and then, later in the year, to the Memory Care Unit. She suffered a fall and required the installation of a partial hip replacement which left her as an invalid for the remainder of her life.
She is survived by her only brother, Meredith Pattie, Jr., of Sandy Spring and three cousins. They are Nancy Oursler Smith (James) of Keymar (MD), Francis "Roy" Oursler (Patricia) of Mt. Airy, and Duane Gill (Catherine) of Houston, TX, and many relatives and more distant cousins from the Thompson family of Howard County.
Shirley was an excellent baker and cake decorator and made wedding caked for more than 50 family members. The cakes were her wedding gift to each of them. Shirley and Francis had more than ten Godchildren from the Oursler, Springer and Thompson families, even though they didn't have children of their own.
Relatives and friends may visit on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 11am to 12pm at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 8300 Old Columbia Rd., Fulton, MD 20759, where a Mass will be held at 12pm. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Burtonsville, MD.
