Scott Whitworth
On March 17, 2023, Scott Mercer Whitworth of Damascus, Maryland entered eternity with his Lord and Savior at the age of 90. He was born November 1, 1932, in Norbeck, Maryland to parents William James and Helen Whitworth.
Scott attended Richard Montgomery High school. He met Jean Umberger in July of 1953 at the Germantown Baptist Church, where they married shortly after on January 14, 1954. He was one of the first park police officers for the MNCPPC where he worked for 20+ years retiring in 1979. He worked for Burdette Texaco in Hyattstown MD for several years. He worked as the Groundskeeper for the Germantown Baptist Church for 60+ years retiring in 2021.
He is survived by his children Dawna Whitworth, Clarksburg, MD; Eugene (Gina) Whitworth, Martinsburg, WV; Craig (Kelly) Whitworth, Conway, AR; Andrew (Becki) Whitworth, Knoxville, MD, and Brett (Sherry) Whitworth, Mount Airy, MD. Eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Charles Whitworth, Damascus, MD; sisters Gladys Masten, Elkridge, MD; Nancy Whitworth, Elkridge, MD; and Lucy Rudder, Bland, VA; sister-in-law Beulah Whitworth, Springfield, WV; and half-sister-in-law Karen (Randy) Harman, Bland, VA; and step-sister-in-law Evelyn Byrd Long, Elliston, VA. Brother-in-law Kenny Hamilton, Gaithersburg, MD; and step-brother-in-law Melvin Wright, Hagerstown, MD.
Besides his wife, Scott was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law William “Bud” (Joan) Whitworth, Elk Garden WV; grandson Kevin Whitworth, Brunswick, MD; sisters June (Frank) Stiles, Dorothy (Jack) Cole, Elsie (Robert) Fisher, Mary (James) Kinder, and Betty Hamilton; brothers George (Wilma) Whitworth, and Johnny Whitworth, brothers-in-law Nunziato Masten, and Karl Rudder and stepbrother-in-law Stuart Wright.
His family will miss his humorous wit and thumbs-up signaling everything was OK. His family takes comfort in knowing he is resting in the arms of Jesus.
Arrangements will be provided by Barbers Funeral Home. There will be a viewing and service held at the Germantown Baptist Church on Monday, March 27, 2023. Viewing will be from 10am to 11am and the funeral service will begin at 11am. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
