Sara Carrier Obituary

Sara Kelsey (Spigener) Carrier was welcomed to her heavenly home on Monday, May 4, 2020. Sara was born in Allendale, South Carolina, on December 28, 1922, the daughter of John Victor and Irma Warren Spigener, both deceased. Her brother, John Victor, Jr. preceded her in death, and her sister Irma (Ernie) Warren Stevenson lives and maintained a close relationship with her older sister throughout her life.

Sara graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina and moved to Washington, DC, in response to a call for more government workers during WWII. She met her late husband, Leon Arthur Carrier, at the United Stated Postal Service and they married on November 15, 1947. Sara retired from her government job once her first child was born and did not return to an outside job until her youngest child was in school. Sara was a substitute teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools, a nursery school teacher, and the daycare director at First Baptist Church of Silver Spring. Once she retired, Sara volunteered for over 20 years at Holy Cross Hospital on the Pediatrics floor. She also served for more than 20 years as a lead Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Silver Spring for Special Needs Adults from a group home in Washington, DC. After Sara moved to Bedford Court, she was part of the Hospitality Team that welcomed new residents and encouraged them to participate in various programs offered in Assisted Living. She loved her friends at Bedford Court and valued the staff members who cared for her.

Sara is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Her children are Linda Sammons (Ron) of South Carolina, Saranne Edwards (Charles) of Maryland, Leon Carrier, Jr. (Carol) of Maryland, and Irma "Cari" Langley of Virginia. Her grandchildren are John, Ben and Julie (Josh Mundell) McMillan of South Carolina, Andrew and Courtney Edwards of Maryland, Leon III (Jenna), Jessica (Bobby) and Lindsey (Roy Henry) Carrier of Maryland, and Jamie Langley of Virginia. Great grandchildren include Isaac and Brooke McMillan, Logan and Eli Edwards, Leon IV, Landon, Johnny, Sara, and Kelsey Carrier, and Boden Henry.
