Obituary

Nancy Ellen (Rozzo) Ruben of Brookeville, MD, passed away peacefully on a beautiful Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023 surrounded by her loving family and sisters. Nancy was born to Peter and Suzanne Lucas Rozzo in Cleveland Ohio on August 1, 1961. Nancy attended the University of Cincinnati in the Honors Program and graduated with a B.S. Biology before realizing her true calling and continuing on to graduate with a B.S.N from the College of Nursing in 1986.  After starting her nursing career in Cincinnati, she took her passion for nursing first to the Childbirth Center in New Jersey, and then to labor and delivery departments in Maryland.

Nancy was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a true friend to so many. She found her career as a labor and delivery nurse to be very rewarding as she tirelessly cared for new mothers, always making them feel very special. She assisted in hundreds of births over her 25 year career. Her dedication to creating a joyous experience for each of "her moms" was evident, as many mothers specifically requested her assistance during subsequent deliveries of their babies. It is only fitting that Nancy passed at the end of National Nurses’ Week on Mother’s Day.

Supporting her family meant the world to Nancy. She was a committed volunteer for her two daughters’ many activities, including horseback riding, gymnastics, dance, diving, and soccer. She made it a priority to uphold cherished traditions with her family for every holiday throughout the years.   She made sure the American flag was always displayed on the patriotic holidays.  Every fall, picking apples for her famous apple crisp and pumpkins for Halloween was one of her favorite family outings. She made our home a special place at Christmas time. From picking out the tree to the extensive decorations highlighted by her nutcracker collection, she made it so festive. Nancy loved planning our family vacations.  Starting at the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks, to Disney World, St. John V.I. and finally to the more tranquil weeks at the Finger Lakes since 2009, she loved the time together with her family. From wave runners and tubing to wine tastings and bon fires, vacations were special. Nancy also made it a priority to nurture the bonds with our extended families, planning regular visits back to Ohio.

Nancy loved supporting the Kennedy Center and National Zoo in Washington D.C. and the National Aquarium in Baltimore as well as the two MLB baseball teams. She enjoyed nothing more than a cold beer and a stadium hot dog. Country music was her thing but she was known to attend some awesome rock shows as well. Nancy always expressed her support and appreciation to those around her, whether it was with kind words or Lauren’s cupcakes. In her leisure time, Nancy avidly loved solving crossword and sudoku puzzles. She was so proud of her vegetable garden and often used the fresh vegetables in many delicious summer meals. The Hallmark Channel became a source of comfort for her during difficult times.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Steve Ruben and their cherished daughters, Lauren and Sara Ruben. She was a beloved daughter-in-law to Donald and Rhoda Ruben and a dear sister to Rebecca (Mike) Honingford, Linda Foutz, Peter (Barb) Rozzo, Mary (Bob) Sheehan, and Christopher (Beth) Rozzo and sister-in-law to Beth (Harley) Haas. Nancy was also adored by her many nieces and nephews, great-nephews and niece, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Nancy is preceded in death by her loving parents Peter and Suzanne Rozzo, sister Mary Sheehan, mother-in-law Rhoda Ruben and nephew Danny Foutz.
