Moira "Mo" Stone Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Moira “Mo” Mewha Stone, on June 27, 2024, at the age of 74.

Born in West Chester, PA to Dr. Priscilla Alden Mewha and Dr. Alan Mewha, Mo grew up in Indiana, PA where her mother taught kindergarten and her father chaired the Geography Department at Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Mo received her degree from IUP and went on to teach middle school Home Economics and Early Childhood Education for 37 years in Montgomery County, MD.  Her true passion was teaching Reading Recovery and helping young children overcome their difficulty with reading.

In the summer of 1972, Mo met the love of her life, Greg Stone, in Rehoboth Beach, DE. After meeting that first time they were inseparable. They married in 1973 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past October.

Devoted wife, mother, “Grams”, sister, and friend, Mo’s kindness, love, and energy touched everyone who knew her. She had a warm smile and spirit that radiated love and compassion. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her two children, her one-year-old granddaughter, and all her four-legged grandchildren.

Adventurous from a young age, Mo studied abroad in Ecuador during high school as a foreign exchange student. Mo instilled the importance of travel and appreciation of culture within her family as they traversed the United States each summer. On a family trip to Ecuador, Mo introduced Greg and their children to her host family. In retirement, she and Greg continued to travel throughout the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii, and abroad to England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, and Spain. Never losing her lust for learning, she would find opportunities to immerse herself and Greg in the local culture.

Mo also enjoyed gathering with her fellow teachers for Bunko parties, having fun with high school classmates, participating in numerous book clubs, entertaining, and the theatre. Mo was a nature girl and loved the outdoors–hiking, traveling in the RV, and backyard family meals. Her passion for and knowledge of wildflowers and birds were enhanced by the many birding adventures with Greg.

Mo is survived by her husband Greg, son Christopher “Kit” (Kim Talbott) Stone, daughter Abigail “Abby” (Chris Buppert) Stone, granddaughters (Liza and Wren), sister Pam (Steve) Patrick, niece (Peggy), as well as many cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, and their children.

Through the gift of organ donation, Mo will live on in the lives of twelve other people.
