Michael Egan Obituary

Michael Egan, 80, of Brookeville, Maryland, passed away on January 7, 2024, after a rapid decline related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Michael was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, on February 17, 1943, the second son of William Egan and Erna Haas Egan. His family later moved to Florida where he attended Central Catholic High School (now St. Thomas Aquinas High School) in Ft. Lauderdale, graduating in 1961.  After high school, Michael studied at several colleges and liked to joke that he was a college All-American because he attended every college in America. He ultimately graduated from the University of Maryland, in 1967, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps after college. After serving, he began a long career in telecommunications.

In 1970, he met the love of his life, Jacquelyn Jordan, at a “lease breaking party” where she initially told him her name was “Debbie.”  They were married on June 19, 1971 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1973, the newlyweds bought a house in Brookeville, MD, with plans to raise a family there. Their family started with a small mixed breed dog named “Oreo” who they adopted in 1973.  Three human children followed: Shannon Marie (1975), Erin Kathleen (1976), and Sean Michael (1980). The family also added two more dogs in later years, Sandy (called “Moose”), and Scooby.

Michael will be remembered for being a “passionate” person, particularly when it came to sports and politics. He was a lifetime member of the Terrapin Club, the booster club for the University of Maryland athletics programs. An avid Terps fan, he regularly attended Maryland sporting events including football, basketball (men’s and women’s), and soccer (men’s and women’s).  Politically, he was a proud liberal who did not become conservative as he got older. He was too smart for that.

Michael is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Jacquelyn Jordan Egan, his children Shannon Egan, Erin Egan (David Tuttle), and Sean Egan (Cristine Ford Egan), his five grandchildren and step-grandchildren Aryel Tuttle, Alyssa Tuttle, Charlotte Jencks, Declan Egan, and Elowen Egan, and his step-great-granddaughter Evelyn Cooper.

The family will be holding a memorial service to celebrate Michael’s life on Sunday, January 28, from 11 AM to 1 PM, at the Roy W. Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville, MD.  Those who wish to remember Michael in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Alzheimer’s Association at .
