Mark McKenna of Gaithersburg passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the age of 69. He passed peacefully while surrounded by his family. Mark was born November 21, 1952 in Buffalo, New York as the last of 4 children to the late Dolores and Thomas McKenna. Mark’s family moved to Gaithersburg when he was in grade school and he went on to attend Our Lady of Good Counsel for high school and then Xavier University in Ohio.
After college, Mark moved back to Gaithersburg and lived there until his passing. He spent many years involved in Gaithersburg Sports Association coaching his boys’ baseball teams. Over the years Mark also dedicated his time to improving and maintaining Watkins MIll and Quince Orchard High School’s baseball fields, making them some of the best fields in the county.
Mark loved spending time with his family, especially on their yearly trip to the Outer Banks. He loved being in the water with his sons and grandchildren. He enjoyed taking his dogs to the shore, bringing them on car rides to see the cows, and taking them on his daily trips to get his 7-Eleven coffee and a treat for them.
Mark was an avid golfer and an active member of Montgomery Country Club. He was a fixture at the club and ran the “McKenna Group” golf game. He also hosted his yearly Labor Day tournament, which was an extremely popular tournament at the course.
Mark was predeceased by his brother Michael McKenna. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Rita McKenna, his son Brian (wife, Samantha), step sons Shawn (wife, Jennifer) and Jason Gasaway (wife, Marie), sisters Maureen Macchio and Molly Racic, numerous nieces and nephews, and his 4 grandchildren Brandon, Emily, Madelyn, and Ryne.
