Margaret Huff Obituary

Margaret A. Huff, 87, of Mount Airy passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025. Jesus welcomed her into Heaven and said, well done my good and faithful servant.

Born October 26, 1937, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD, Margaret was the daughter of the late Vernon (Bun) and Sarah Thompson Dantz.  Margaret was raised in Sandy Spring, MD along with her late brother Vernon (Jaybird).  Her first job was waitressing at Ms. Hurd’s restaurant in Sandy Spring.  She also babysat for several families in the area.  It was while she was babysitting for Ann and Bill Brady that she met the man who become her husband.  Margaret began dating Bill Huff in 1955 and they were married on March 31, 1956.  Bill had two daughters from a previous marriage.  Margaret helped raise Eleaner and Linda and she and Bill welcomed an additional four children – Margie, Mary Ann, Johnny, and Helen.

In addition to her parents and brother, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Huff, her stepdaughers, Eleaner Huff Holley and Linda Huff Heimberger and her son-in-law Greg Marrow.

Margaret is survived by her children and their spouses, Margie Davis (Brad), Mary Ann VanMetre (Joe), John Huff (Anastasia) and Helen Lohr (Fred).
Margaret was a loving grandmother to her grandchildren: Jason Gillespie (LaDonna), Sarah Hose (Brandon), Andrew (Jen) Lohr, William (Kasey) Huff, Russell Lohr (Payton), and Jake Huff (Nikki).   The light of Margaret’s life was great grandchildren:  River, Willow, Luke, Violet, Gabriel and Thomas.  She will be remembered by her special friends, Delores Neal, Melva Smith, Alice Lohoefer, and Diann Linton.

In 1958 Bill and Margaret bought a home in Etchison MD.  Their home in Etchison was a gathering place for many people.  On any given weekend you could find the neighbor kids playing in the yard, a poker game going on in the kitchen, or Bill and his buddies playing music.  Bill and Margaret held a pig roast each year rain or shine.  It was definitely the place to be.  While raising their children Margaret would work at home doing laundry and ironing for several families in the area.  She also would clean houses for $10/day which sometimes also included babysitting several children while cleaning.  Margaret went to work as a Cafeteria Worker for Montgomery County Public Schools in 1972.  She worked her way up to Cafeteria Manager and Building Service Worker before retiring in 1997.    While working for the school board Bill and Margaret also ran the Etchison Store cooking and selling steamed crabs for $25 a bushel.  While working and after retiring she continued to work a variety of part time jobs including Kemptown Store, Kemptown II, Little Georges IGA in Woodbine, New Look Cleaners in Damascus, Gustin Gardens, and the Sears Warehouse.

Margaret loved spending time with people.  Some of her favorite pastimes included playing Bingo, slot machines at the casino, traveling with both the Damascus Travel Club and the Mt. Airy Senior Center.  She was a member of the Mt. Airy American Legion Auxiliary for many years helping wherever she was needed.

For the past 11 years Margaret lived in Mount Airy on Park Avenue.  She drove her 23 year old KIA to Walmart, Food Lion, Burger King, the bank and the Senior Center and bragged that she only would have to put gas in her car two or three times a year.  On Wednesdays you could find her at Burger King at 10:45am having lunch (after sharing coupons) with a large group of friends.  She was a frequent diner at J&P, Mount Airy Inn, and Lu & Jos.  Everyone knew and loved Margaret.  During her time living in Mount Airy she became quite “famous” for her coconut cakes, making over 125 cakes each year.
