Lois Carolyn Lord of Gaithersburg, MD, died peacefully in her home in Asbury Methodist Village on March 6, 2026 at the age of 100
Lois was born on June 26, 1925, in Washington D.C. to Herbert Boardman and Esther Christine Lord. She grew up in Chevy Chase, MD. with her sister Helen and her brother Herbie (Herbert Jr.)
Lois graduated from the local high school in 1943 and won a scholarship to attend George Washington University in D.C. She commuted by bus as this was wartime, WWII. Lois majored in English Lit., but changed to education for her Master’s at Syracuse U., where she participated in the Student Dean Personnel Program from 1947-49.
After graduation she worked for a year at George Washington U. but decided to take the Intensive Program to meet the urgent need for teachers. That fall she started her fulfilling career of 31 years as a teacher in the Montgomery County MD. School System. She taught grades 4-5 and Junior High Art and English before retiring. In the summer of ’52 she sailed on a troop ship to Germany to teach in the American Dependent School in Worms. Her numerous side trips took her around Europe, to the British Isles and Scandinavia.
Another year she took a sabbatical to study art at American University in D.C. and took all of the courses for a Master’s program
Lois bought her first house in 1968 in Bethesda MD., close to her parents and took care of them for many years. She lived in the house for many years, expanding her lovely garden yearly, teaching Sunday School, studying watercolor, and traveling. She always loved having a special dog or cat around the house to keep her company.
In 1998 Lois sold her house and moved to Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD. There she was able to continue her beloved gardening and watercolor painting, met wonderful friends, and continued to be very involved in her church. She loved going to listen to speakers and participate in the arts and craft classes.
Lois celebrated her 100th birthday in June with several family members attending. She was queen for the day. Lois was very active until the day she passed.
