Joseph "Butch" Hock, Jr. Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph "Butch" Rethly Hock Jr. Surrounded by a loving family Butch passed away peacefully on the morning of April 18, 2025 at the age of 75.

Joseph was born on January 31, 1950, in Peoria, Illinois. He graduated from St. John's College High School, Washington DC, where he was named by the Washington Post, football’s All City “Center”. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement from the University of Maryland, and later obtained a Masters Degree in Psychology from Hood College, Maryland.

Butch married the love of his life, Terri Gates, at Christ the King Church, Silver Spring, MD on September 13, 1986. Together they built a beautiful life, raising two sons: Joseph Ryan and Drew Martin.

Butch truly believed that it is more blessed to give than to receive. He was generous, compassionate, and had a beautiful soul, always willing to lend a helping hand. A devoted husband and father; his personality, radiant smile, wonderful humor and distinctive laugh would light up any room. He always welcomed others into his life with an open heart and unwavering warmth.

Joe was a member of the Montgomery County Police for decades. He served in many capacities including as an Undercover Agent, Commander of the Pedophile Division, Supervisor of the Narcotics Jump Out Squad and Supervisor of the Hostage Negotiations Team. In that role as a Hostage Negotiator, he was twice decorated as a Hero.

After retiring from the police force, Joe worked as Sherwood High School’s College Career Advisor. With over 15 years in this role, he guided numerous students through the college application process. He also helped students find scholarships & financial aid for those who might not be able to afford college.

Butch’s unrelenting support and dedication to family will always be remembered; he was often called on for advice and consolation, always with patience, a gentle, reassuring voice and a witty joke to make one feel better.

Joe held deep reverence, compassion, and unconditional love for his family, and the same was true for the students he counseled, mentored, and for the many friendships he nurtured. One could talk to Joe for just a few minutes and consider him a friend. To know Joe was to know resilience, loyalty, and empathy.

Butch is survived by his beloved wife Terri, his sons Ryan and Drew and his siblings, Carole Hock Kerns (Christopher), Nancy Hock Connors (Charlie) and John Michael Hock (Tasha), cousin Alexa Berret (Art), and thirteen nieces and nephews.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents; Helen Cyr Hock & Joseph Rethly Hock, and sister Ruth Ann Hock.

A Celebration of Joe's Life is being planned.
