John Larry Stargel Obituary

 

John Larry Stargel, whom we refer to as Larry was born on 10/28/48 and passed away to return to Heaven on 11/21/21. Larry was born in Maryland and lived his early life in Wheaton, later moving to Olney where he resided until his passing. He is a graduate of Wheaton High School, class of 1967.

Larry was an extremely hard worker throughout his life, sometimes having 3 jobs at once; working for the Federal Government, Safeway, driving a school bus and being in the Army Reserves.

His passions in life included weight lifting, body building, comic books and video games. Larry also loved old TV shows and was a big fan of Superman.  He was a disco dancer and taught others on how to dance.

Larry’s military career started just after high school, following in his father’s footsteps and was a member of the 352nd Civil Affairs Unit as a cook. He then became a Military Police and was a Sergeant-Major in the 8830th OSUT Brigade and then a Command Sergeant-Major of the 220th MP Brigade until he retired with 28 years of dedicated and exemplary service to our Country. His awards were numerous, including the Meritorious Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal. He was also awarded the Overseas Service Medal for time in the Middle East.

Larry lost his Wife Sandy before his passing, and is survived by his Daughter Suzanne Stargel Bass & her Husband Bernie Bass, Their Sons Steven & David, and Sandy’s Sons from a previous marriage Kevin & Jeff Beaufort with their 4 children.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations are not needed but would be gratefully accepted in his name to Kidney Cancer research.

A reception with be 12/19, Sunday from 1-4 pm at Sandy Spring Fire Hall – The Oak Room; 17921 Brooke Road, Sandy Spring, MD 20860.

Interment will be a private service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Mt Airy, Md at some point in the future.
