Joan Dudenhoeffer Obituary

Joan Claire Dudenhoeffer passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 4, 2025.  Born in 1932 to the late James Roy and Marie Galvin.

Joan was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt and is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years Edwin (Eddie).  Survived by their seven children, Deborah (Eugene) Kessler, Deann (William) Olli, Barbara McCort, Beverly (David) Rosania, David (Sue) Dudenhoeffer, Peggy (Frank) Aparicio, and Patricia (Mark) Henricks; sixteen grandchildren Erin, Joan, Jeanette, David, William, Barbara, Frederick, Kristine, Alexandra, Joseph, Emily, Patrick, Daniel, Caroline, Courtney and Tyler; thirteen great-grandchildren, Garrett, Kate, Keith, Luke, Lilikoi, Austin, Olivia, Koa, Zachary, Samuel, Justin, Davis, and Liliana; plus many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her dearly loved sister Anna Marie Kuzma.

Joan grew up in a very close-knit family where she and her sister were adored and deeply loved by their parents. She was brought up with a strong Catholic faith, which she would instill in her own children. She lived in St. Louis, Denver, and Chicago, and each of these cities played a significant role in shaping her. She often referred to herself as a city girl and enjoyed the vibrant life that city living offered.

As a young woman one of her first jobs was working for Warner Brothers in St. Louis as a clerk. It was while working there that Joan and Eddie’s journey began with a blind date that led to their marriage just a year later. Together, they embraced life as they raised seven children. Eddie's career allowed them to move several times, offering them the opportunity to live from coast to coast over the years before they finally settled in Maryland.

Joan was a homemaker for many years before returning to the workforce. She cherished the time spent raising her children and focused on their happiness and activities. During those years, she took on many roles at their schools, including PTA President, volunteering as a school librarian, and room mom. She was also an active member of The Mother’s Guild.

After reentering the workforce, she held various administrative positions before accepting a job in the records division of the Montgomery County Police Department. Joan developed a strong bond with her co-workers there, and their unwavering support was invaluable during her breast cancer diagnosis and treatments, which ultimately led her to become cancer-free. She continued to work at MCPD until her retirement.

Joan’s greatest joy was showering her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with love. As a mother she embodied a gentle, lighthearted spirit and possessed a great sense of humor. She thrived on shopping and hosting memorable family gatherings and holidays, particularly cherishing the magic of Christmas. Her enthusiasm for the season and cherished family traditions connected each generation, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever.

Joan and Eddie enjoyed traveling, exploring numerous parts of the US and Europe. They also experienced many cruises over the years. As a long-time parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi, Joan volunteered for various activities. She led a full life that was filled with family, friends and faith.

Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Aunt Joan - Rest in peace, we will love you forever.
