Mrs. Debra Peters Fulcher, age 84, died Monday, May 16, 2022. Debra was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 30, 1938, and is the daughter of the late Lt. Commander Howard Bowers Peters and Frances Russell Peters. Her stepmother, Virginia Peters, also helped care for her for many years. Lt. Commander Virginia Peters served as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) in World War II.
Debra is survived by her loving husband Mr. Robert Wendell Fulcher, her son Robert Dale Fulcher, her daughter-in-law Dr. Christina Burck, her granddaughter Rebecca Leigh Fulcher, her grandson Jonathan Leo Fulcher, her daughter Debra Dawn Whelan (Fulcher), her grandson Pearse Robert Whelan, her son Russell David Fulcher and her daughter-in-law Ann Elizabeth Flach-Fulcher. She leaves behind family in Arlington, Virginia and New Oxford, Pennsylvania, and many faithful friends and caregivers.
Debra attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Girls’ School in Baltimore, Maryland and spent summers with her Aunt Faith and Uncle Charles Reinecker in York Springs, Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and her graduate degree in Statistics from the University of Maryland in College Park. She also completed an early childhood education certification during this time.
Debra married Robert Wendell Fulcher in 1962 and were nearing their 60th wedding anniversary. They raised their children in College Park, Maryland. After several years of teaching at the University of Maryland, Debra became a civil servant for the United States federal government serving as a statistician for both the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in Hyattsville, Maryland, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA) in Shady Grove, Maryland. In their retirement years, they lived in Olney, Maryland.
Debra’s interests included reading, spending time at her summer home with her family in the Eastern Shore, baking Christmas cookies, hosting her annual New Year’s Day party, celebrating her family’s birthdays, attending church, making her favorite dish for the annual family picnic, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren. Her favorite holidays were Christmas and Easter. During their time together Debra and Robert enjoyed travelling to such destinations as France, Germany, Hawaii, and the Bahamas.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 26th at 10:30 am at Oakdale Emory Church, 3425 Emory Church Road, Olney MD.
