Chester Edward Babylon

Chester Edward Babylon “Chet”, 84, of Olney, MD, passed away on June 4, 2026. He was born on September 26, 1941, in Baltimore, MD, to Kenneth and Helen Babylon.

He was a devoted husband of 60 year to Sandra, and was deeply loved by his two daughters, Tracy and Kerry; his grandchildren, Eric Eckley (Caryn) and Linda Cowan (Nick); and his great-grandson, Ruairidh Cowan. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Ordakowski (Donald), his nephew, David, and his niece, Dawn.

Chet had a distinguished 35-year career as a Cartographer at NOAA. He transitioned to his “fun” retirement job at Home Depot, where he got to talk about tools all day long! After 10 years there, he retired to a life of leisure and dedicated service at Salem United Methodist Church in Brookeville, MD, where he headed the cemetery committee and the United Methodist Men.

His love for classic cars started in high school, and in his younger years, you could often find him working under a hood. He also became an avid woodworker, spending countless hours in his home workshop creating one-of-a-kind pieces and holiday items for the church bazaar. Many early family vacations were spent camping with friends. He also held a deep love for seafood, fostered by many family trips to Ocean City, MD, and the Outer Banks of NC—though you could just as easily find him enjoying a crab feast with friends and family. While he enjoyed playing softball and bowling, his love of football only extended to the Baltimore Colts. In his quiet time, he was an avid reader and skilled bridge player.

A celebration of life will be held at Salem United Methodist Church on July 18, 2026 at 10:30 am, with a luncheon to follow in the church hall. If you are unable to attend, we will live stream the service on the church website: https://www.youtube.com/@salemumcbrookeville
