Carol Jean Swartz

Carol Jean Swartz, age 78, of Derwood MD passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023.  She was born October 24, 1944, in North Carolina, to Joseph and Geraldine Peebles.  She was a 1962 graduate of Montgomery Blair High School.  She married H. Ray Swartz on October 12, 1963.  In the years that followed, Carol spent her time raising their sons, helping with the family business, developing her passion for horses, and so much more.  As an equestrian, Carol competed in dressage, was involved with the Redland Pony Club, President of Potomac Valley Dressage Association, and was a riding instructor.  Carol was more than an instructor to most of her students.  She was a mentor and friend.  She was strong, compassionate, loving, trustworthy, and generous.  She made herself available to anybody who needed to talk or a hug.  Her kitchen counter was the setting for countless tales resulting in laughter and tears.

She is survived by her husband, H. Ray Swartz; Son, Thomas (Shawn) Swartz: Son, Christopher (Hope) Swartz; Granddaughter, Samantha (Bryn) Swartz; Grandson, T. Ray (Grace) Swartz; Granddaughter, Jayden Swartz; Grandson, Jackson Swartz; Sister, Geraldine “Kay” (Jonathan) Swindle; Brother, Joseph (Eleanor) Peebles; Brother, Donald (Kathrin) Peebles; Sister, Pamela (Douglas) Marks; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Geraldine Peebles; and Son, Henry Ray “Jay” Swartz.

The family invites family, friends, and others whose lives were touched by Carol to join us at Route 108 Pizza & BBQ in Sandy Spring MD to celebrate and honor her life on Saturday April 8, 2023 from 12pm-3pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, VA.
