Carol Simonsen Obituary

Carol Ann Simonsen, 85, of Olney, MD died peacefully on December 20, 2023 at Holy Cross Hospital – Germantown surrounded by her children.

Carol’s life journey began as star dust from heaven on May 3, 1938. Born in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York to her beloved parents William and Gertrude Hirschfeld (deceased), she was big sister to Barbara and Diane as they grew up on Steinway Street in Astoria. She was a graduate of Bryant High School class of 56’, wife of Richard Simonsen (deceased) – who she met while working at IBM as a Card Punch Operator, they wed on November 2, 1957 and were blessed with two children. Mother to son Richard Charles in ’59 and daughter Debra Jean in ’63. The growing family moved from New York to the suburbs of East Brunswick, New Jersey. An IBM transfer lead them to Olney, Maryland in ‘73. Carol became another mom to Debra’s husband, Timothy Shawn in ’87. Carol was also blessed to be Mom Mom to Kiley ‘96, Connor ‘99, and Dylan ’01. Carol was sister-in-law to Joe, Bob and June (deceased), Aunt to Andrea, Diane, Eileen (deceased), Janice, and Gail, and Great Aunt to Daniel, Caitlin, Sarah, and Michael. She also leaves behind several cousins and dear friends.

Throughout her life Carol was involved in the church…she taught Sunday School while in New York and New Jersey. She used her creative talents helping with the holiday bazaar and started the youth group at Good Shepherd in Olney, Maryland. In addition to being a wife and mother, Carol had various part-time positions. She was a receptionist at a doctor’s office in Silver Spring and at an attorney’s office in Olney. She also volunteered her time at the local library and hospital.

Carol loved to cook, bake, read and write, and was always working on a craft. She dabbled in the garden which included many bird houses hung with high hopes of a new family moving in. When any of these activities were done with her kids or grandkids – all the better. She always looked forward to getting together with her friends to play Mah Jongg and Rummy Cube…the stakes were low, but the comradery was high. She enjoyed vacations with family and friends…going camping in Dutch Country, Pennsylvania, relaxing at the shores of New Jersey and the beaches of Maryland, Disney World, Nashville, Canada and weekend trips to Williamsburg and National Harbor to name a few.

Carol’s life journey with us on earth was completed on December 20, 2023, and now as her life in eternity begins by the grace of God – she shines bright in the heavens. We thank God for the star dust from heaven sent on May 3, 1938. Our beloved mom Carol will be dearly missed – may we find comfort in knowing that she is at peace with her Lord, Jesus Christ and that she will be there to share a smile at what is yet to be for all of us.
