Anthony Martin “Tony” Smith departed, with the love and blessings of those closest to him, on January 28th, 2024. He joins his son, Wyatt, who preceded him in passing. He is survived by his daughter, Jodi; son Steven; life partner Victoria; her sons, Ben and Colby; sister Lynn; brother John; Daisy, his loyal day-nurse; and so, so many friends and fond acquaintances numbering more than the rings of a redwood.
Tony knew just about everything there was to know about a tree and made his business around them. In forty years of service, Tony contributed to the beautification of natural land all across Maryland, Virginia, and DC. Tony did a bit of everything, and anything he did, he did well. When not working, he enjoyed repairing and maintaining farm equipment, preparing for and participating in the tractor pull events at the Maryland State Fair, tending to his garden, and time with his family and friends.
He was a man like the trees he tended: strong, quiet, larger than life, with roots deep and wide, and stories beyond telling. He chose his words and his company with great care. He valued honor, integrity, and hard work above all. If he was a friend, he was a friend for life; if he chose you, you were family. He spoke plainly, lived simply, and never looked away from a hardship if he could roll up his sleeves and help it.
Around him, all things grew, and thrived, and were loved. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the medical personnel overseeing his care throughout his short illness, and to those who lent their prayers, support, and positivity. By way of condolences, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you do what Tony would do: plant a tree, make something grow, do a kind deed.
