Anne Wasson, 86, passed away on July 4, 2020 in Olney, Maryland. Her husband Al, her brother Richard, sons David and Douglas, and two grandchildren Diana and Corinne survive her.
Anne grew up in Danielson, Connecticut. After graduating from Killingly High School, she earned a bachelors degree from Mount Holyoke College and a masters degree from Cornell University. She then began a career as an elementary school teacher in New Haven, Connecticut. During this time, she met and married her husband Oren (Al) Wasson. They had two children together, and raised their family in Bellport, New York, followed by Oak Ridge, Tennessee, before settling down for good in Olney, Maryland in 1973. After the kids grew, Anne re-started her teaching career, first working as a home instructor for the Montgomery County school system and then becoming a teacher at the National Institutes of Health childrens school, where she would tutor kids during their hospital stays.
Anne had a wide circle of friends, and was loved by everyone. She was active in the Olney Mill homemakers group and loved hanging out at the Olney Mill pool. A highlight of every year was the annual Wasson family vacation at Myrtle Beach. She was a huge opera buff and enjoyed going to every opera that the Kennedy Center would put on. She owned a prized Steinway grand piano, which she loved playing and using for piano lessons. She also loved dogs, from her childhood dogs, to the dogs she has as an adult, followed by a large group of grand-dogs. A major part of her life was the St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal church in Laytonsville, MD. Her faith was a major underpinning of her life. She served the church in many capacities, including being a member of the Vestry. She was a regular at their weekly bible studies.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Anne’s memory to St. Bartholomew’s church in Laytonsville, MD, the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health, or the Kennedy Center.
