Shirley Joan Whitworth 81, of Elk Garden, WV went home to be with her Lord January 8, 2019. Born Oct 11, 1937 in Germantown, MD she was a former resident of Germantown and Laytonsville. Joan was the wife of the late William ‘Bud’ Whitworth and daughter of the late Eugene Umberger and Dorothy Umberger Wright. Joan faithfully served her Lord and Savior as an active member of the Germantown Baptist Church for over sixty years. Joan retired from the Nations Bank formerly Suburban Trust. She is survived by her daughter Debbie (Jon) Reed of Elk Garden, WV, son Brad (Sue) Whitworth of Wasilla, AK. She was blessed with six grandsons, Joshua, Jacob and Jeremiah Reed and Christopher, Jeffrey and Gregory Whitworth and twelve great-grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Jean (Scott) Whitworth and Karen (Randy) Harman, and brother Melvin Wright; five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, four foster children and many nieces and nephews.
Although heavy hearted, her family possesses a great joy and certain knowledge that Joan is home with the Lord and she and her husband are together once again.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Germantown Baptist Church 17640 Riffleford Rd, Germantown, MD and the service will begin at 2 pm. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
