Michael Robert Calvin

Michael Calvin, 66, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, went to be with his father and brother on Saturday morning, surrounded by his family.  

Mike was born in Charleston, Illinois, to Robert and June Calvin. He was an All-State quarterback at Sullivan (IL) High School, where he played for his father.  He also excelled on the basketball court and as an all-around athlete in track and field.  He then went on to play football and high jump at Eastern Illinois University.

Mike met the love of his life, Patricia Wells Calvin, while they were in high school. They both attended Eastern Illinois University, were married in 1974 in Decatur, Illinois, and spent the past 45 years happily married. Mike and Patricia welcomed the light of their lives, their son, Robert Michael Calvin, in 1979.

Mike spent his 34 year career in highway / traffic safety helping people through strong personal relationships and impactful global diplomacy.  He retired as the Vice President of Programs and Member Support with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) in 2015.  Mike served in many different capacities over those 34 years, even as Interim President and CEO of AAMVA.  He received NHTSA’s top award, the Public Service/Lifesavers award in 2014, and AAMVA’s Chair of the Board Award in 2007.  Mike’s ability to use his diplomacy skills were single-handedly the reason that the motor vehicle authorities now have an international standard for driver licenses, as well as the current working relationships with their counterparts around the globe.

Mike is survived by his wife, Patricia Calvin of Gaithersburg, Maryland, son Robert Calvin (Anna) of Gulf Breeze, Florida, mother June Calvin of Montgomery Village, Maryland, sister Nancy Luce (Bob) of Westminster, Maryland, brother Patrick Calvin (Lisa) of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and sister-in-law Nancy Schaljo (Ray) of Sullivan, Illinois.  Also surviving are nieces Katie and Allie Luce, Elsa Calvin, Julie Munson, Jill Russo, Joey Schaljo.  Mike was preceded in death by his brother Mark Calvin and his father Robert Calvin.

Visitation will be held at 10am followed by services at 11am Saturday, November 16, 2019, at Potomac Presbyterian Church, 10301 River Road, Potomac, Maryland, 20854.  Interment to follow at Darnestown Presbyterian Cemetery, 15120 Turkey Foot Road, Darnestown, Maryland.  Flowers can be arranged through Beall’s florist of Damascus, Maryland.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvin Family Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Nancy Schaljo, 5770 Trailwinds Drive #223 Ft.
