Joanne Barnes

Joanne Barnes of Derwood, Maryland entered into the arms of Jesus on February 25, 2024. She was born on October 24, 1940 in Marion, Virginia to James and Elaine Doane. She is survived by her son Craig Barnes (Tina), and daughter Christi Barnes; granddaughters Melissa Pleasant (Sam), Jessica Parks (Nick), and Andrea Barnes, and great granddaughters Taylor and Londyn Pleasant. She is also survived by her brother Kenneth Doane, brother-in-law Dick Sacchetti (Dung), brother-in-Law Eddie Barnes (Brenda), sister-in-law Wilma Weed, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Betty Sacchetti and the love of her life - her husband, Herb Barnes, just a year ago.  

She was dedicated to her faith and her church and was proud of the fact that she and her husband were the first couple married in the original First Church of God chapel in Rockville. She remained a stalwart member of this congregation through its move and transformation into the Clarksburg Church. 

A passionate prayer warrior, she could always be counted on to keep her friends and family - and their troubles - in her heart and in her prayers. No issue was too large, or heartbreak too small, to make it into her daily prayers and devotions. 

She worked as a teller in the same bank and branch in Rockville for 35 years and knew everyone who walked into the building. She enjoyed the community she had there and missed the camaraderie of her colleagues and customers long after she retired. 

She was the quiet, steady voice of reason behind her husband and children’s many ill-advised adventures and was often the good-natured brunt of many family pranks and jokes. She was an avid reader, puzzle solver and enjoyed photography and building photo albums.

The family is grateful to the many people who looked out for her as she struggled to navigate life without her beloved husband, particularly her neighbor Liz, and her circle of lifetime friends from her church - the Keenagers. 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 12 noon at Clarksburg Church (22820 Frederick Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871). Family will receive friends before the service beginning at 11am.
